1. Hold your mala beads in your dominant hand and for each bead, take a full inhale through the nose and exhale out the mouth.
2. If that feels like you’re moving too slowly, inhale for the time it takes you to move your fingers across 4 beads. Then exhale for 4 as well. I don’t know about you but sometimes when I’m feeling anxious, my body needs to move – so do what feels the most soothing to you in the moment.
3. Try repeating an affirmation for anxiety relief for every bead that you touch, as you move through all 108. As you’re affirming, focus on how the beads feel between your fingers.

How To Use Mala Beads In Meditation
Traditionally, using mala beads for meditation could not be more simple.
Just drape your malas in your dominant hand (traditionally it’s your right hand, but it works no matter what, so just do what’s most comfortable for you). Move through each bead and, you have a few choices:
- recite a meditation mantra
- say a meditation affirmation
- take a full cycle of breath, with a clear mind.
Then move on to the next bead and repeat.

Then, wear your malas as jewelry during your flow. I find it easier to wrap the malas around the wrist during yoga, as opposed to a necklace flopping around everywhere. The beads will do their healing magic on you as you practice.
In addition, you can use your malas during savasana (final resting pose at the end of practice) to stay present, focused, and awake as you wind down.
