You are never on your own, my friend! The universe always has your back. Today I’m sharing how to ask the universe for a sign, and tips on how to recognize it when it comes.
Receiving Guidance from The Universe
If you’re a spiritually aware person, then you’ve probably asked the universe for a sign at some point in your life.
Feeling spiritually connected makes life more meaningful, interesting, and fulfilling. So when you’re feeling stuck or unsure, you can ask the universe for a sign to help light up the next step on your path.
This is easier to do than you might think.
I offered energy healing sessions and intuitive readings for years. And I can’t tell you how many people question the signs they receive.
I believe the most difficult thing about receiving your sign from the universe is trusting your own intuition.
Usually, your initial response is the correct one!
Below, I’m going to give you three easy steps to follow to ask the universe for a sign, and then recognize it when it appears.
1. Choose Your Question
Here are some examples of when you may want to ask the universe for a sign:
- When a passed loved one is near
- Confirmation a loved one crossed over
- Help with making a decision
- Answers and clarity
- For the sheer comfort it brings
If you’re looking for the answer to a question, I have some pointers for you to keep in mind.
Choose just one question at a time.
When you ask the universe for a sign for specific guidance, the same rules apply as when seeking answers from oracle cards. The clearer your question, the clearer the answer.
Be sure you only ask for a sign in regard to one situation at a time, so you know what topic you’re on when the sign is delivered.
Be specific.
Think about what you want to know, and what the sign will mean to you when it comes.
For example, if you ask a ‘this or that’ question like:
Should I stay in this relationship or leave?
When your sign shows up, will that be a sign to stay or to go? Are you comfortable interpreting the sign using your own intuition? If so, this is totally fine.
Otherwise, try rewording your question so the answer can only mean one thing. For example:
If it’s time for me to leave this relationship, please send me a clear sign today.
See how the second example has far less guesswork involved? If you struggle to trust your intuition, choose your phrasing with care.
You can also include your preference about what kind of sign you want (a certain animal, etc). I’ll cover the most common signs from the universe later in this post.
2. Ask for Your Sign
Once you’ve settled on your question (and its wording), simply take a moment alone to center yourself and ask your question. Don’t worry, the universe is always listening.
You can be as formal or casual as you’d like here.
You may want to ask the universe for a sign under the full moon, as part of a new moon ritual, or simply toss it out whenever you need some extra guidance and support.
What To Say When Asking for a Sign
As long as you’re clear on your question, then you really can’t get this step wrong.
The words should come from your heart.
But if you need help, here’s a little template you are welcome to use, if you feel guided:
Dear Universe,
Please send me a sign [optional: in the form of …] to guide my path forward. I ask that you deliver it in a way that is meaningful and unmistakable to me.
[insert your question here]
Thank you for this gift.
3. Be Receptive
The next step is the hardest part because it requires surrender. Once you’ve asked for a sign, the ball is out of your court.
You need to strike a healthy balance of letting go of control while keeping your eyes and heart open to receiving your sign.
Law of attraction is always in the mix, delivering you experiences that match your dominant feelings.
So if you’re chasing down your sign and worrying that you’re going to miss it, you’re going to hold it yourself away from receiving it.
Instead, have faith and trust in the universe to deliver your sign in perfect timing, under the best conditions for you.
How To Know a Sign When You See It
If you find yourself asking, was that a sign? The answer is always yes! Do not overthink it.
Notice how the sign makes you feel. These prompts will help:
- What does it remind you of?
- Who does it remind you of?
- What emotions surface?
- What’s your knee-jerk reaction in regard to your question?
Your gut instinct is your intuition at work, and you can trust it.
Common Signs from The Universe
The universe can get quite creative when delivering your sign! Here are some of the most common ways.
Angel Numbers
The universe loves to use numerology to get its messages across. Angel numbers come in many forms:
- The same number multiple times throughout the day
- A repeating number like looking at the clock at 5:55
- A number sequence like 123
- The single appearance of a number that holds special meaning for you

Animals
Each member of the animal kingdom carries unique, spiritual wisdom.
So when a butterfly pays you a visit, or if a rabbit hops across your path, Google that spirit animal and read about its meaning.
My favorite way to learn about animal meanings is through the Spirit Animal Oracle Deck. The animal messages in the guidebook are awesome.
I also use this deck when I want a message from the universe. I’ll simply shuffle the cards and pull one while I contemplate my question. I always get exactly what I need.
If you love animals, give this method a try next time you ask the universe for a sign.
Dream Visitations or Lucid Dreams
If you’re more receptive to signs while you’re in dream state, the universe may take advantage of this by sending you a sign while you’re asleep.

Coins, Feathers, & Other Objects
Sometimes the universe uses objects to send you a sign. If you find an inanimate object that has no business being where it is, that’s a sign.
Coins are very common – especially if your question is about financial abundance.
Example:
I remember asking for a sign when we purchased our dream home.
The morning of the move, I randomly pulled the first random box out of my car and carried it into the house.
When I opened the box, there was a feather inside.
I had no idea how it had gotten there, but it was a magical moment for me, and I knew I was home.
Signs from the universe are often subtle and sweet. They’ll feel like a big deal to you (although they may seem insignificant to others – ignore them and relish the moment).
Rainbows
If you find yourself in the right place at the right time to catch one of these natural wonders, you’re receiving a sign, whether you’ve asked for one or not!
Rainbows are especially popular among passed loved ones (human, furry, and feathered).
Music
Your sign from the universe may hit you when you pop on the radio and catch a meaningful lyric or hear a song that has significance to you.
If you wake up to music, notice what’s playing when your alarm goes off! I do this every morning for a special sign from the universe.
Helpful People
Sometimes the universe will arrange for someone to tell you just what you need to hear.
Example:
Several years ago, I remember being worried about a personal issue, and was second guessing myself quite a bit.
One day, the phone rang, it was the vet calling. My cat had recently had surgery but didn’t have any upcoming appointments, so I thought it was odd.
When I answered, the receptionist said, “we just wanted to tell you, great job and you’re doing everything right.”
When I hung up, I cried!
It was just what I needed to hear, out of the blue, from an unlikely source.
If something brings you comfort, it’s always, always a sign.
What To Do After You Get Your Sign
Express gratitude. Be sure to thank the universe for responding. You’re in a relationship with the universe, so regard it as you would a dear friend.
Plus, the more you affirm your appreciation for your sign, the more connected to the universe you’ll be, and the more signs you’ll receive.
There is no limit to how many signs you can ask for, so keep practicing!
Journal about your experience. Memories fade faster than you would believe. I strongly recommend you capture your sacred message from the universe by writing about it in your manifestation journal.
That way, you can come back to it the next time you need comfort.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Sign?
It depends, but I’ve found the universe has excellent response time. I usually receive my signs within a few days.
But your experience may be different: if you included a timeframe in your request, you may get a response within hours.
Or, the universe may need extra time to coordinate events in order to deliver your sign.
When you look back, it’ll become clear on all the things that had to fall into place to get you into the right place at the right time. Those magical details belong in your journal.
What If You Don’t Get a Sign?
Sometimes the absence of a tangible sign is the clearest way for the universe to guide you away from something.
If you don’t receive a sign, give yourself permission to take an objective look at the situation on your mind, and consider your options.
While it may not always be what you want to hear, the universe is always speaking to you. Trust your intuition when it comes to what the absence of a sign means.
When I don’t receive a sign, I usually find the universe’s silence is just confirming what I already know (and may not want to admit).
So, trust the emotions and revelations that come with the absence of a sign. The universe is a straight shooter and loves you fiercely.

thank you for this article.
I would like to ask you for your opinion on my situation simply cause I can’t figure out what happened.
It’s like I was given something and then it was taken away from me.
It is about a man. It was when I decided I will be myself in every sense possible, and that way I will attract what is for me. I rarely see/meet someone whom I would go crazy about. And on that day I was walking and there was a man looking at me. He stood out with everything about him. I passed him by. After that I saw him only few times. After that, not just he was looking at me, but he also smiled at me, he was looking at me walking there around my house… If he wanted to initiate the contact I didn’t understand it back then. I just thought we were gonna see each other again, cause there is where I live and where he comes sometimes for his own business. I went totally crazy about him from that day. And didn’t see him again. I was thinking about him, I was sad, it wasn’t clear to me what happened all of a sudden. After 2 months I saw him again, it was a situation where I think only universe could orchestrate that, for a few seconds we passed each other by somewhere and were looking at each other.
In the meantime I was trying Youtube manifestations, telepathy messages, just to get a chance to get to know that man who got my attention and with whom I have shared magical eye glazing. I was seeing numbers crazily that entire time, like: 1010, 1212, 2121, 2112, 1919, 1818…
When I accepted that maybe that situation was nothing meaningful for me, and stopped hopping and decided to let it go, I stopped seeing numbers.
Still, I wanted to know what was that all about. I asked the universe… “If I am ever gonna see him again, then please let me either see him or let me stumble upon a bird feather.” But I wasn’t thinking that much about him anymore.
After a week I was walking, I was thinking about him and then stumbled upon a feather. I though, maybe it was just a coincidence, feathers are all over.
Few days after that, at my working place, someone left a big feather on the table.
Anyway, do you think all of this has any significance or was it all just in my head and wishful thinking?
