History shows us there is much to be gained by using the tools Mother Nature has provided. Humans have been harnessing the power of botanicals for over 5,000 years. The Bible alone contains 188 references to essential oils!  We’ve clearly come full circle on this topic as a civilization. Our ancestors gathered flowers, herbs, and other plant parts to create medicines, cosmetics, perfumes, and tools for emotional and spiritual clarity.  Then, through advancements of modern medicine, chemical drugs were introduced. The concentration and strength of these medicines created quite the allure, though we’ve learned the hard way over time that synthetic drugs come with a price; creating side effects and new ailments of their own, and focusing primarily on addressing symptoms, as opposed to root cause.

Today, we begin to embrace the concept of natural healing yet again, as millions turn to Aromatherapy to help re-establish the mind-body-spirit connection in our fast paced world. There certainly is a time and place for modern medicine as well, and we are extremely fortunate to be living in an age where we can take advantage of both! This poem illustrates how we’ve come to rediscover what our ancestors innately knew:

A Short History of Medicine: “Doctor, I have an earache…”

2000 B.C.: “Here, eat this root.”
1000 B.C.: “That root is heathen. Say this prayer.”
1850 A.D.: “That prayer is superstition. Drink this potion.”
1940 A.D.: “That potion is snake oil. Swallow this pill.”
1985 A.D.: “That pill is ineffective. Take this antibiotic.”
2000 A.D.: “That antibiotic has side effects. Here, take this root!”
